Left 4 Dead: Two New Blog Posts

Seems to all be about Left 4 Dead today… Well anyway, take a look below:

First Post

Less than four hours to go until Left 4 Dead goes live at the stroke of midnight (EST) on Steam, and that means the Valve Launch Box will be dragged out of its off-season home in Gabe Newell’s tool shed.

What does the Launch Box do? When its keys and levers are turned and pulled in sequence, it emits clouds of dry ice, fires off klaxon noises, and finally, when you press the red button, releases games. And, because it’s kept in Gabe Newell’s tool shed and nobody ever bothers to check it for bee hives, bees. (If there’s one thing that makes those things angrier than klaxon noises, it’s dry ice!)

Like the release of the Orange Box this past October, the entire staff will be here tonight to celebrate. Unlike with the Orange Box release, we’re hoping, the entire staff will not be attacked by as many bees.

Second Post

Good news on the Valve Launch Box test run! There was an electrical fire, and all the bees burned to death. The bad news: several employees also perished in the fire and the game will be delayed.

Just kidding! About the game. There were some burning deaths. But the game’s coming out!

We’ve said too much. Who wants to see our second TV commercial?

Left 4 Dead: Team Xbox Review 9.1/10

Yet another review for Left 4 Dead has been posted today. This time by Team Xbox, giving the game a 9.1 out of 10. Take a look:

No, Left 4 Dead isn’t a particularly deep game, doesn’t offer a ton of variety and could use some more polish in many areas.. but it’s so immersive and satisfying the majority of the time that you will ignore some of its shortcomings. Not totally forgive them, mind you, but it feels like the good outweighs much of the bad. On more than a few occasions, I pointed out some glitch that came up during a match to a co-worker and the response was, “Yeah, but it was so much fun!” It’s like having a 1965 Mustang convertible with a faded ragtop.. you can kind of gloss over the cosmetic for what’s under the hood and how it feels driving down the road.

Gameplay: 9.6 It’s so immersive and satisfying to sling lead at an infinite number of creepy, crawly zombies! It’s not particularly deep, but there are far more moments that’ll make you grin goofily and move tensely to the edge of your seat.
Graphics: 8.6 Some of the visuals are fantastic, such as the zombie movement and death animations, but there’s also a lot of sloppy terrain clipping and glitchiness that hinders the overall experience a tad.
Audio: 9.1 It gets repetitive (as most games like this do), but there’s fun variety in the spoken lines and the sound cues of various boss zombies are great for determining proximity and direction.
Longevity: 9.3 No, it’s not a deep journey, such as Fallout 3, but what’s there will probably have players battling for quite a while in the game’s competitive multiplayer settings.
Innovation: 9.4 Valve takes what could have been a run-of-the-mill shooter and injects enough freshness into it that it should stand well away from the pack. It’s a great blend of survival/horror and FPS action.
Overall: 9.1

Left 4 Dead: GameSpy Review 4.5 out of 5

GameSpy have also posted their review of Left 4 Dead today. View it below:

Perhaps more than any year that’s come before it, 2008 could be called The Year of Living Cooperatively. This holiday season has seen the release of many excellent co-op games on every gaming platform, from Gears of War 2 to Call of Duty: World at War to Resistance 2. While all of those games are great examples of where co-op gaming could be headed in the future, for the last few months our eyes have been focused squarely on Valve’s Left 4 Dead. Instead of just shoehorning a second player into a traditional single-player campaign, Left 4 Dead has been specifically built for co-op play from the ground up, and the resulting product is one of the most intense, enjoyable gaming experiences to date. It gets better with every human player that’s added, to the point that playing with three of your friends is close to gaming nirvana.

The basic premise of Left 4 Dead puts four characters in the middle of the worst horror-film scenario: surrounded by hordes of “infected” and running for their lives to a rescue point. The actual origin of the infected is never clarified, nor is it that crucial; what matters is that at every turn, there’s a chance that a few dozen zombies might come charging at you at full speed, looking to claw you apart. Then there’s the threat of a few special “boss” zombies that appear now and then to really make a mess of things. And so you need to team up with three chums to fight through city streets, office buildings, highways, farms and sewers to keep from becoming zombie chow.

Left 4 Dead: IGN Reviews 9/10

IGN have released their review for Left 4 Dead. They gave the game a very encouraging 9/10. Take a look:

There’s absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we’ve ever played. It’s almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie. This is an incredible and highly replayable multiplayer experience that’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re looking to prepare yourself for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Just make sure you bring your friends.

Presentation: 9.5 The movie-style presentation captures the essence of the game perfectly. Valve’s typical high production values and attention to detail are obvious.
Graphics: 9.0 The Source Engine isn’t as cutting-edge as it used to be, but it still impresses with detailed environments, amazing lighting, and the fact that it can throw zombie hordes at you with ease.
Sound: 9.0 An immersive audio system with plenty of solid voice work and a dynamic music system. You’ll learn to dread the sound of a witch crying or a tank approaching.
Gameplay: 9.0 Left 4 Dead is quite possibly the perfect co-op shooter. It’s an absolute blast to play with others, though the single-player mode feels a bit hollow.
Lasting Appeal: 9.0 Incredibly replayable and the Versus mode is also fun, but the small number of scenarios may feel limited to many.
OVERALL: 9.0 Outstanding

Call of Duty: World at War: Custom Config File

BASHandSlash has today released a new config file for Call of Duty: World at War. This config will help those who want to get more FPS out of their game. Check it out below:

For most players with CoD4 experience, the frame rate hit you get playing CoD:WW will be a bit of a rude shock. While Infinity Ward opted to make CoD4 for the median PC systems out there, Treyarch appears to have gone the other route and catered more toward the high end systems.

What this means to you and me is that frame rates are lower than in CoD4. In some cases, much lower. Since frame rate ( = frames per second, or fps) is proportional to success in this game - increasing frame rate is very important.

Aside from the obvious, like ensuring that you shut down any non-used processes on your computer (anti-virus, VOIP, browsers…etc.), or getting a faster broadband connection (FIOS anyone?), the only immediate alternative we as gamers have, is to “tweak” our player configuration file.

-125 fps in stock is not too shabby and certainly playable even in competition.

-Turning off all of the bells and whistles, the rate “zooms” to 171 fps.

-As you may have read our article on the MP Beta Tweak , yitchwwbeta1 and 2.cfg improved on this quite substantially.

-The benchmark rises to approximately 200 fps.

-Finally, for those who are dealing with older computers which result in the game turning into a Powerpoint-like slideshow out there, you might want to try our first all-out FPS maximizer: yitchww1.cfg. This config raises the frame rate to a whopping 372 fps on my machine. I say whopping…it only increased the frame rate by a factor of two…it could have been a great deal more with Shader 2.0 available.

Left 4 Dead: Versus Preview

Left4Dead411 have today released their preview on Left 4 dead’s Versus mode. Take a look below:

Versus mode is being released with two movies: No Mercy and Blood Harvest, with more hopefully to come in future updates.

The structure of the game is simple. Team A begins the map on the Survivor team and Team B starts out on the Infected team. The players run through the first map of the movie and the Survivors try to reach the safe room with as much health and as many Survivors as possible. The Infected do whatever they can to stop them. After this round is over, a score is given to the Survivors based on their performance and the teams switch sides. The map starts over, with Team B now playing as Survivors and Team A on the Infected side. Team B now tries to outperform and outscore Team A. After this round is over, the teams move on to the second part of the movie.

The scoring system is a little complicated at first. After the Survivors reach the safe room or the Infected kill off them off, a score is given to the Survivors. The score calculates the average distance traveled by the Survivors (total of the distance traveled by each Survivor as a percentage, divided by 4) and adds this to how much real health they have at the end (after applying held health kits, pills don’t count since they’re only temporary health). This number is then multiplied by the number of Survivors alive. This is multiplied again by a difficulty modifier given to each portion of the map. These seem to be anywhere from x1 to x2. In a full game, each team will finish with five different scores, which are then totaled together. The team with the most points wins.

[(Average Distance Traveled) + (Health Score)] * (Number of Survivors in Safe Room) * (Map Modifier)

As an example, if four Survivors make it through to the safe room with full health (+100 health each) and it’s on a finale with x2 difficulty rating, the total score would be (100+100*4)*4*2 = score of 4,000 points for that map.

Versus mode has no difficulty setting. Instead, the regular Infected take a backseat (perform the same as Normal difficulty level in campaign mode) and the bosses play an even greater role, allowing the difficulty to be controlled by the skill of the players. The basic Infected are still important and keep the Survivors occupied, but the bosses will be the main threat. One of the benefits of having two separate modes is that playing against player-controlled bosses can be balanced independently from AI bosses. It works out really well.
