Left 4 Dead: Live on Steam

As of midnight EST, the PC version of Left 4 Dead, Valve's zombie thriller, is now available via Steam to gamers around the globe. The title will be available for the PC and Xbox 360 at retail stores on Tuesday, November 18 in North America, and worldwide on Friday, November 21.

Call of Duty: World at War: Custom Config File

BASHandSlash has today released a new config file for Call of Duty: World at War. This config will help those who want to get more FPS out of their game. Check it out below:

For most players with CoD4 experience, the frame rate hit you get playing CoD:WW will be a bit of a rude shock. While Infinity Ward opted to make CoD4 for the median PC systems out there, Treyarch appears to have gone the other route and catered more toward the high end systems.

What this means to you and me is that frame rates are lower than in CoD4. In some cases, much lower. Since frame rate ( = frames per second, or fps) is proportional to success in this game - increasing frame rate is very important.

Aside from the obvious, like ensuring that you shut down any non-used processes on your computer (anti-virus, VOIP, browsers...etc.), or getting a faster broadband connection (FIOS anyone?), the only immediate alternative we as gamers have, is to "tweak" our player configuration file.

-125 fps in stock is not too shabby and certainly playable even in competition.

-Turning off all of the bells and whistles, the rate "zooms" to 171 fps.

-As you may have read our article on the MP Beta Tweak , yitchwwbeta1 and 2.cfg improved on this quite substantially.

-The benchmark rises to approximately 200 fps.

-Finally, for those who are dealing with older computers which result in the game turning into a Powerpoint-like slideshow out there, you might want to try our first all-out FPS maximizer: yitchww1.cfg. This config raises the frame rate to a whopping 372 fps on my machine. I say whopping...it only increased the frame rate by a factor of two...it could have been a great deal more with Shader 2.0 available.

Left 4 Dead: Versus Preview

Left4Dead411 have today released their preview on Left 4 dead's Versus mode. Take a look below:

Versus mode is being released with two movies: No Mercy and Blood Harvest, with more hopefully to come in future updates.

The structure of the game is simple. Team A begins the map on the Survivor team and Team B starts out on the Infected team. The players run through the first map of the movie and the Survivors try to reach the safe room with as much health and as many Survivors as possible. The Infected do whatever they can to stop them. After this round is over, a score is given to the Survivors based on their performance and the teams switch sides. The map starts over, with Team B now playing as Survivors and Team A on the Infected side. Team B now tries to outperform and outscore Team A. After this round is over, the teams move on to the second part of the movie.

The scoring system is a little complicated at first. After the Survivors reach the safe room or the Infected kill off them off, a score is given to the Survivors. The score calculates the average distance traveled by the Survivors (total of the distance traveled by each Survivor as a percentage, divided by 4) and adds this to how much real health they have at the end (after applying held health kits, pills don't count since they're only temporary health). This number is then multiplied by the number of Survivors alive. This is multiplied again by a difficulty modifier given to each portion of the map. These seem to be anywhere from x1 to x2. In a full game, each team will finish with five different scores, which are then totaled together. The team with the most points wins.

[(Average Distance Traveled) + (Health Score)] * (Number of Survivors in Safe Room) * (Map Modifier)

As an example, if four Survivors make it through to the safe room with full health (+100 health each) and it's on a finale with x2 difficulty rating, the total score would be (100+100*4)*4*2 = score of 4,000 points for that map.

Versus mode has no difficulty setting. Instead, the regular Infected take a backseat (perform the same as Normal difficulty level in campaign mode) and the bosses play an even greater role, allowing the difficulty to be controlled by the skill of the players. The basic Infected are still important and keep the Survivors occupied, but the bosses will be the main threat. One of the benefits of having two separate modes is that playing against player-controlled bosses can be balanced independently from AI bosses. It works out really well.

Crysis: Battlestar Galactica Mod Update

The Battlestar Galactica Fleet Commander 2 mod team have posted an update today, including screenshots, progress status, and a new website:

The leader Solstyce handed out a few information on the progress of the mod which you can read here:

Currently we are putting assets in game and rigging them for flight and with weapons. The current focus is to get our assets in game with the right flight dynamics and load outs. Our modelers and texturers have been working hard on getting the interiors of the ships made. We decided on making the interiors modular so we didn't have such a huge modeling task. we will construct the interior sets in the CryEngine2 rather than import one huge .cgf.

WIP Screenshots
The following are some screenshots of the tests they have been doing lately. They show off the Heavy Raider in action, WIP battlestar classes ships and an interior gang way.

Website Update
In addition to the news on the mod the team also updated their official web site which now features an own Crysis mod tab. Included is of course their awesome video teaser and quite a few information on the various vehicles the mod wants to feature in the end.

Crysis Wars: v1.2 Patch Update

A new update has been posted today over on MyCrysis about the v1.2 patch for Crysis Wars. Take a look:

Introduction
As the last dev blog we provided you was so well received, we’re giving you another update on the progress of the latest Crysis Wars update, due out in the not too distant future. Patch 1.1 was released on the 4th November, but even before it’s release the multiplayer team had begun work on Patch 1.2, the next patch for Crysis Wars. Now that 1.1 is out the team has fully moved across to focus on 1.2.

Not only did the first update feature the Linux dedicated server and the 64bit binaries, but the team also fixed an issue with CryNet which prevent people from being able to add a server to their favourites list for more than 1 gaming session.

Patch 1.2
In this patch you’re going to see plenty of game balancing issues fixed and several other issues getting resolved. The team has been hard at work testing all the updates that are included in the patch and things have been carefully tweaked to make sure you guys get given a great update that you’ll all be really happy with. You'll be seeing several stability issues solved with this update, as well as lots more game balancing issues and exploits fixed to be fairer for everyone.

We have been monitoring the forums continuously over the past few months and have been seeing all of the information you have been gathering for us. For example there are many threads in the Bugs and Technical Support Forum and Feedback and Suggestions forums that have really helped us focus on what the community wants to see.

Conclusion
The patch is still a little while away, but we’ll have another update for you in the near future, which will include a lot more details on the patch and information on when it will be released, and of course once again how you can get hold of the patch itself.
